چکیده

One of the most robust ways of building a voluntarily controlled BCI that wouldnt require almost any training on behalf of the user, is through the P300 potential. In this study we implemented and evaluated a simple auditory P300-based musical interface. The interface consists of a dynamic 5-class auditory oddball paradigm. Each stimulus is tuned to a specific note, forming a part of a chord. At the same time each stimulus is mapped to a different chord. The user can change the harmony of the auditory oddball paradigm by mentally counting the occurrences of the desired stimulus. The interface was evaluated on 8 healthy subjects on two scenarios: (i) the audiovisual and (ii) the auditory. The Inter-Onset Interval was set to 220ms and within a trial each stimulus appeared 20 times. As a result a user is able to change the harmony of the interface every 22 seconds. Both scenarios were evaluated on 8 healthy subjects. In the audiovisual scenario the average online accuracy was 80% and in the auditory 44%. According to these results an auditory only P300 based Brain-Computer Musical interface is hardly feasible.

Control of a 2-DoF robotic arm using a P300-based brain-computer interface

In this study, a novel control algorithm, based on a P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI) is fully developed to control a 2-DoF robotic arm. Eight subjects including 5 men and 3 women perform a 2-dimensional target tracking in a simulated environment. Their EEG (Electroencephalography) signals from visual cortex are recorded and P300 components are extracted and evaluated to perform a real...

P300 Harmonies: A Brain-Computer Musical Interface

We present P300 harmonies: a P300-based Brain-Computer Musical Interface. Using a commercial low-cost EEG device, the user can voluntarily change the harmony of an arpeggio by focusing and mentally counting the occurrences of each note. The arpeggio consists of 6 notes separated by an interval of 175ms. The notes of the arpeggio are controlled through 6 switches, where each switch has two possi...

Toward a high-throughput auditory P300-based brain-computer interface.

OBJECTIVE Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology can provide severely disabled people with non-muscular communication. For those most severely disabled, limitations in eye mobility or visual acuity may necessitate auditory BCI systems. The present study investigates the efficacy of the use of six environmental sounds to operate a 6x6 P300 Speller. METHODS A two-group design was used to asc...

Decoding auditory attention to instruments in polyphonic music using single-trial EEG classification.

OBJECTIVE Polyphonic music (music consisting of several instruments playing in parallel) is an intuitive way of embedding multiple information streams. The different instruments in a musical piece form concurrent information streams that seamlessly integrate into a coherent and hedonistically appealing entity. Here, we explore polyphonic music as a novel stimulation approach for use in a brain-...

Evaluation of the Hidden Markov Model for Detection of P300 in EEG Signals

Introduction: Evoked potentials arisen by stimulating the brain can be utilized as a communication tool  between humans and machines. Most brain-computer interface (BCI) systems use the P300 component,  which is an evoked potential. In this paper, we evaluate the use of the hidden Markov model (HMM) for  detection of P300.  Materials and Methods: The wavelet transforms, wavelet-enhanced indepen...
